Program Description:
Accomplishing the most, with and through others, requires us to know our own styles and tendencies and to appreciate the styles and tendencies of others. The diversity of our working relationships and situations requires us to be more flexible in connecting with others.

Each of us has our own unique style, or leadership style. When we interact with others who have a similar leadership style, communication is relatively easy. But when we deal with others who have different leadership styles from ours, communication and cooperation can be challenging. The most important element of working across different leadership styles is our flexibility; our willingness and our ability to see things from the other person’s point of view.

In this program, we will consider four leadership styles, or styles of interacting with others. We will learn about our own style and that of others so we can work with other leadership styles to sustain motivating, successful relationships, and create better results in our careers.

About Diana:
Diana Wolgemuth is a Training Consultant for the Dale Carnegie Franchise in Central New York and started with the company in February 2009. Prior to that, she worked at Hand Held Products (known today as Honeywell) in Skaneateles for 7 years as the Learning and Development Manager. She also worked in a variety of positions at Welch Allyn. Diana is currently on the Board of Directors for the CNY Chapter of American Society of Training and Development, as well as the Executive Vice-Chair for CNY Works Board of Directors. Diana has presented to organizations such as the Syracuse and Binghamton Chapters of the Project Management Institute, Syracuse and Utica Rotary Clubs, Career Connections for CNY Works, and the Youth Group/eCuse organization.

Entreprenurialism, Community Involvement, and the Healthcare Field

The third presentation for our 2011 Professional Development Speaker Series will take place at the new office of Costello Eye Physicians & Surgeons in New Hartford. Dr. Patrick Costello, of Oneida NY, returned to practice in the Mohawk Valley after undergraduate studies at both Notre Dame University and SUNY Albany and completing medical school at Albany Medical College. He currently serves as clinical faculty at SUNY Upstate Medical College and has 4 ophthalmology offices throughout the Mohawk Valley. In addition to his professional work, Patrick, in partnership with the Sherill Kenwood Community Chest (SKCC), developed the Sherrill-Kenwood Park Festival as a fundraiser to maintain and develop Robertson Park & Playground in the city of Sherrill.

Dr. Costello will discuss his experience and the advantages of owning a business and medical practice in the Mohawk Valley, and will describe his involvement in hosting the Sherrill-Kenwood Park Festival. This presentation is sure to provide motivation and guidance for your entrepreneurial plans, no matter your field; as well as inspire you to create the positive change in your community that you wish to see.

On March 24th, over 70 people filled the Tramontane Cafe in Utica for the second presentation in MVYP’s professional development speakers series. Rick Short from Indium Corporation and Ryan Miller of Romanelli Communications discussed the ways in which young professionals may find success here in the Mohawk Valley (or anywhere they may find themselves) to the standing room only crowd. Rick started the evening by pointing out that in addition to being sited by CNBC as one of the best cities in America to buy a starter home, Utica is also ranked #58 out of 200 largest metropolitan areas by the Milken Institute in their 2010 Best-Performing Cities Index, and then stressed the importance of taking an active role in your own success. Rick encouraged the group to start with a goal in mind, make things happen, and make sure that you have the tools you need to be successful. Building off of this overview, Ryan then shared a case study describing how he promoted his recent album “The Flood” and stressed the importance of building relationships, thanking those who support you, and reading and writing as much as possible. The third presentation of MVYP’s 2011 Professional Development Speaker Series will be held at the New Hartford office of Costello Eye Physicians & Surgeons on Thursday, May 12. Dr. Patrick A. Costello will be discussing the advantages of owning a health care practice in the Mohawk Valley and the importance of community involvement, highlighted by Dr. Costello’s annual fundraising event for the Sherrill-Kenwood Community Park & Playground.
